I got an email today which really was a whack in the side of the head.

I’ve been harping on about backups for years – whether it’s your computer, your databases, your website … whatever.

Today an email came via a business associate, who let us know that a company we’ve been dealing with for years just lost EVERYTHING in the Victorian bushfires (in Australia) recently.

They lost their home.

They lost their business.

If they had backups at home, they’d lost them to the fires.

I know this is a drastic example, but it really made me think about how important it is to have a REGULAR BACKUP of everything you’d had to lose (for any reason) in a safe place.

It could be online at one of the great new backup services.

It might be in a safe.

It might be at a family member’s home.

Whatever you choose to do, think hard and long about how much is OK to lose in a situation like this.

This company has lost all their client details, invoicing, banking, historical information AS WELL AS their stock, all their worldly possessions … and this is devastating.

It didn’t happen to just one couple – there were entire towns wiped out, over 2,000 homes burnt to the ground, 200+ deaths, and many many businesses also lost.

Some will never recover.

Give some thought today to your backup procedures … and send some kind thoughts to those affected by the fires in Victoria this month.

It’s all time well spent.
