Today’s question is: “What happens if I delete my Home page on my website?”

First let’s look at HOW the Home page of a website works.

Home pages are generally named:

  • index.html
  • index.htm
  • index.php
  • etc.

This tells the website browser (Firefox, Chrome etc) which PAGE/POST to display as the “home” page or “main” page.

Some Content Management Systems and other website management systems allow the user to select a specific Page or Post to be the “home” page, whether it’s called “index” or not. This is true of WordPress.org and to specify which page is going to be the “home” page, all you need to do is :

  • select SETTINGS in the left sidebar of the Dashboard (after you login to the Admin area)
  • then select READING
  • if your website is using PAGES (rather than Posts), select the button for “A static page” (as shown in the image below), and select the actual Page/Post from the drop down list
  • if your website is using POSTS (rather than Pages), select the button for “Your latest posts” (as shown in the image below)
  • after you make your choice, you need to click the blue “Save Changes” button.

Once the Home page has been selected, the browsers used by visitors to your site will automatically display the Home page of your choice.

For WordPress.org users:

  1. before you delete a Page or Post (currently selected as the Home page) from the list shown in your Admin Dashboard, you need to select a NEW PAGE OR POST as shown in the image above
  2. after you’ve made the new choice and clicked the Save Changes button, you can then go into Posts or Pages and delete the one you wish to remove.

“What happens if I delete my Home page on my website BEFORE I select a new one?”

For WordPress.org users, deleting a page/post already specified in the Settings as the Home page could have an adverse effect.

Depending on the Theme used, and the plugins installed, you could “lose” the ability to login to the Admin Dashboard. This happens when the site can’t work out what it’s supposed to do – there is no ‘alternate home page’, so please remember to ALWAYS select a new Home page BEFORE completely deleting the current Home page.

For non-Wordpress users, it will depend on the Content Management System being used – contact me and we’ll discuss what needs to be done in your situation.

“If I don’t choose a new Home page first, can we fix my broken website?”

This situation happened to one of my clients this week, and yes, it can be fixed, but it requires editing live files on the website, and there will be a fee involved.

To easily avoid this, simply make sure to select your “new” home page in the Settings/Reading screen as shown in the image above.

If you have any questions about how to “delete my home page”, please do let me know.

Cheers,
Teena
